Web SSH Terminal: Connect to Any Server from Your Browser
Updated March 2026 · 5 min read
Tired of installing PuTTY, Termius, or iTerm just to check your server? DevToolKit's Web SSH Terminal lets you connect to any server directly from your browser — no downloads, no configuration, no app stores.
Why Use a Web SSH Client?
- No installation — works on any device with a browser (laptop, tablet, phone)
- Cross-platform — Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android — doesn't matter
- Emergency access — server down at 3 AM? Open any browser and connect
- Secure — WebSocket over TLS, credentials never stored on server
- Save connections — bookmark your servers for quick access
How It Works
- Open the Web SSH Terminal
- Enter your server details: hostname, port, username
- Choose authentication: password or private key
- Click Connect — full terminal appears in your browser
Under the hood: your browser connects via WebSocket to our backend, which establishes an SSH connection to your server using paramiko. Full xterm.js terminal emulation with 256-color support, copy/paste, and resizable panels.
Features
- Full terminal emulation — vim, nano, htop, tmux all work
- Password & key auth — paste your RSA private key
- Saved hosts — save server connections in your browser
- 256-color support — syntax highlighting, colored output
- Resizable — terminal adapts to window size
- Mobile friendly — works on phone browsers too
Security
Your credentials are transmitted over HTTPS/WSS (encrypted). The SSH connection is established server-side and proxied to your browser. We never store your passwords or keys — they exist only in memory during the active session.
Use Cases
- Quick server check — no terminal app installed on this machine
- Client's computer — access your servers from any workstation
- Mobile emergency — restart a service from your phone
- Teaching — show SSH to students without setup hassle
